Vendors take an
Engineer to Dinner
SEMPPES
wants to help in this economy. We offer Dinners to vendors at $25.00 or for
$20.00 more bring an engineer to the dinner. The $20.00 will get the Engineer a
year membership to SEMPPES plus the dinner. The meetings offer great speeches
& good food. See you at the next meeting.
2010 Golf Outing
Keep warm during the
winter months – Start thinking about the SEMPPESS golf outing at the Lakes

Hemingway President’s Notes First
i must thank Dennis for the good job on the presentation,
it appears that it was needed because he has a lot of requests to amend
vendors information. Our
meeting this month is right after St. patricks day so we will have free
Beer. Everyone
remember that the end of this month is the deadline to pay the 2010 dues, all
past presidents are required to pay $20 to remain in good standing, per our
Articles of Incorporation. I
have attached an Email form Jeff Jensen, who has offered to host a Barbeque
on the Telegraph cruise day. I like cars and I know we have other
enthusiasts. LET’S DO IT. Good afternoon Gentlemen,
For more
information or any input you may have, feel free to call me at (248) 320-7675
No. 1&2 Turbo-Generator Trip. The
Turbo-Generator had been running for about 30 Hours, when the Unit tripped on
the oilring trip on the High Pressure Turbine. The
Engine Room Operators, Ron Klee and I responded to the trip while the Boiler
Room operators were busy reducing the load on the boilers. The instantaneous
loss of approximately 900,000 Lbs/Hr flow caused the Safety valves to lift. The Turbine trip
was reset and the Throttle Valves were closed, latched and reopened. We
brought the turbine back up to synchronous speed and the Main Board Operators
put the Generators back on line. I instructed the
Main Board Operators to load the first 40 MW rather quickly to help the
boilers with the high Manifold Pressure. The turbine seemed to be normal and
we got a call on the radio stating that the Manifold Pressure was normal, but
No. 1 Boiler still had a safety Valve blowing off steam. The drum pressure
being about 1300psig and the Safety Valve relieving, Ron Klee and I got our
jackets and earmuffs and went on top of the boiler to see if we could
persuade the safety valve to close. What we found was
that the Superheater Safety Valves had closed, but
one of the drum valves stuck open. It turned out that the lifting nut cotter
key was left out or fell out during the event and the nut had run down and
made contact with the lifting arm while the valve was open. We removed the lifting lever from the Valve
and the Safety closed. You don’t know
what relief that was to our ears. Unfortunately the
boiler was relieving too long through the drum safety and there was not enough steam flow
through the superheaters and we had a failure in
one of the bends and had to take the boiler out of service for repairs. On Saturday
morning we shut the Turbo-Generator down. Once the load was off the
generator, we checked the Overspeed trip and found that the trip was just 20
rpm above the operating speed. After confirming the trip speed twice we shut
the unit down. We opened up the
front standard on the H.P. turbine and found a piece of metal had broken off
the oilring.
We had to adjust the counter weight on the trip, not knowing how much
to change the weight, I called Alex Mirich, who was
the G.E. shop Rep and he told me that each notch changed the trip speed about
45 rpm. After a little discussion we decided to stay on the conservative side
and only moved the counterweight 2 notches and shoot for about 1910 rpm
rather than the normal 10% of 1980 rpm. On the subsequent
down turn of the Turbo-Generator we confirmed that the trip was set at 1910
rpm, this points out the value of being on good
terms with your vendors, to be able to call on a Saturday morning and get
information needed. It is funny, but
after 15 years or so I still remember the exact change per notch. Ron Klee wrote a
procedure for adjusting the trip speed on the G.E. Turbines and it worked on
all the larger units we had. Al Preis 50/50 Winners 1sr Place - Joe Genaw from
